A to Z — IT’S Z Time!

Zero Tolerance… that’s my “Z” choice. I chose this over my family’s recommendations of Zombies, a household favorite, and Zork… an old game. My final 2019 A to Z challenge letter… Zero Tolerance.

Having worked in retail for most of my adult life (I use the word adult loosely) I can with absolute certainty that this policy… and any like it are absolute CRAP!

Here are a few Zero Tolerance Policy’s and what happened.

  1. Theft -I was told to fire a person for using .06 remiaing on an abandoned goftcard but told I had to keep a person on who “lost” a deposit. ”
  2. Harassment – On attempting to terminate an employee for making sexual advances in the form of groping I was told no. A week later same type of situation different person, transferred to another district.
  3. Drug Use – Several people were kept on while others fired after failing drug testing.
  4. Standards – Depending on the location of the building I was standing in… Standards were different. A good manager having a bad week could be documented but the crap manager not even trying would be fine.
  5. Dress Code – Usually the Ladies got away with more in the stores. Honestly though you poor ladies have it rough with the stupid company shirts you were provided. I sometimes looked the other way too.

I think we should have Zero Tolerance for things though… The world would be a better place. We wouldn’t need to be all crazy about it or anything just a word here or there. Someone harassing a girl tell them to stop. See someone stealing report them. Someone being racist correct them. We seem to allow a lot of disrespectful things to happen around us and we often say nothing. We don’t want to get involved, or speak up for fear of being ridiculed, perhaps… or maybe wrong.

The world seems to have a zero tolerance policy for civility… I’d like to see us all do better. Remember my “K” blog on kindness… Lets practice that for a while, and some understanding as well.

Thanks for being with me all month, I feel behind but we all stuck it out together!

Youth Today, A to Z With “Y”

When I was a youth we had some responsibilities and now the youth of our world dont… Or do they? Oddly I find myself saying the same things about kids today as my Grandfather said about me. Out of curiosity I took some time out of my busy schedule to do some research on behalf of you, my faithful readership… here is what I found.

Of course todays youth have so much more, more technology more information, more more more… I worry for todays youth they don’t know what we have gotten them into.

Of course neither did some smart guy who was born in 470bc… and not much has really changed about human nature, young or old.

A TO Z Impossible — We bring you “X”

Every sinking year for the last 10… I get to this letter and lose my mind. A to Z challenge letter “X” is a pain in the ass… Heck its a pain in the world… I can’ be inspired by a letter that is only there because… well I dont even know why it’s there… Spelling things with X could easily be used with other letters. Someone someplace got lazy… kind of like whats going on with the TXT message language. Im suR U knO wot I mean. Stupid language.

Rant over I feel better now. In this case though after sitting down and planning out my month worth of posts based on the alphabet I have this written for the letter x. “X Is stupid every year and I hate it”. Perhaps some of you have something similar written in your own notebooks? Let me know… I look forward to reading other’s X posting every year… So here is mine…

WINNING!!! An A to Z Challenge Letter

That’s right I am now winning, I am all caught up and one day ahead of myself. I will continue to win at being a winner in the A to Z challenge by typing on my keyboard and downing gallons of coffee until I have finished prepping to WIN! By being a winner… I dont think winners can use the word WINNING to much. Even if you Lose you can be a Winner at losing. Then there is the possibility of being first in any search for the words Win, Winning, Winner, and if I misspell something Whining, Whinner and Wind… I’m a winner at misspelling things!

See the source image

If you want to be a winner too, decide you are one! You are a winner, you WIN! If you happen to not WIN the word WIN is still there… so you WIN again, and again!

So to all of you WINNERS out there in winning world!!!!

That is all, so go out there and WIN!

Vaccines — Eliminating Evil

After that last post, all serious and such… Vaccines something I can try and have some fun with. There are those out there that will read this and pass out… From my discussion of needles no doubt. Others will mock my lack of knowledge and journalistic… errr, blogeristic integrity. BUT! I’m going to do it anyway… For those of you who read “U” for understanding I talked to my friend and sent him a link… He told me I was still an “Ignorant bystander of life” but he loved me anyway. I’ll take that anyday. Thanks for reading!

Vaccines though, oh my. Scary, scary stuff right. I remember having to get shots when I was kid and literally hiding under the doctors exam table, screaming, kicking and biting. Yep, biting… I was wily and unpredictable like that. On the plus side though, I never did get Polio, Smallpox, Measles, Mumps, Cholera, Anthrax, Rubella, Typhus, or Tuberculosis. Those are all things I have been vaccinated against… Maybe a few more, I’d have to check to be certain.

I get the anti vaxxers though, I mean who want to get a shot. That’s what this is all about… Not wanting to pass out. Since my college MMR shot I pass out when getting shots. Up until then I just hated them, but in a “I’m not getting stabbed” kind of way. I can’t think of any other legitimate reason not to get vaccinated. When I was in the Military they shot me up with I dont know how many different things before I could be deployed. What they did though was shoot it all into your arm with a pneumatic gun like they use to change tires on racetracks. Likely not hygienic what with all the grease but No I’m also vaccinated against rust and corrosion, and I didn’t pass out. So lets all start using the air gun vaccine machine thingy.

I put that pic up so you could see the thingy…. That beard though… someone needs to vaccinated against whatever it is that is growing in there. Since we are on the topic of vaccines we could all use. Here are a few I would like to see.

  • Stupidity – Eliminating stupidity in our world would be of great use. Possible side effects include; loss of jumping to conclusions, turning the power off before doing electrical work and, going 40 in the passing lane.
  • Insecurity- Elimination of allowing ones internal voice from talking us out of doing something we want to do. Possible side effects include; more participation in school dances, having that lump checked and, not talking over others.
  • Monsters – No more monster under the bed or in the closet; Side effects for parents include a good nights sleep and a better sex life.

What vaccines would you like to see?

A to Z Letter “U”

I had this planned out you know… I would keep up, I haven’t. It’s alright though today I have set aside time to do the remaining letters and set them to publish on the days they need to. You see I understand, that I’m a outright mess with keeping up on things 🙂 I know, I know your reading that and saying to yourself “Aren’t we all?”. Perhaps, but, I didn’t want to shift my issues on to you. Today on Outside Perceptions A to Z Challenge let me present the Letter U, for understanding.

That little bit of wisdom is one of my favorite sayings. It was given to me by a very special kind of Human when I took on a position as a trainer for a now lost and forgotten company. It’s true, one of the most true things in the world. I can, you can, we all can explain things to each other. The problem is when our shared life experiences dont mesh up to find that immediate common ground. You need some examples, ok sure… I want you to understand.

Try explaining the color blue to a color blind person.

To extreme perhaps… How about to a blind person? Without a frame of reference it becomes difficult to make yourself understood. You could describe the color Blue as a soft warm feeling like a good towel fresh from the dryer, smelling of flowers in spring. I am not a poet… so for me, it would be difficult to describe without a great deal of thought on both my observation, and their limitations.

The same can be said for a person of color trying to describe how they experience things in life. When I get pulled over (yes it happens) I get a small shot of adrenalin and a brief moment of panic, then I calm down and get my paperwork ready. That isn’t the case for others who live in the world. Let me give an example I witnessed.

When I was in High school my friend and I were taking a day off from school (cutting class). We wanted to go to the mall and we were in a hurry. My friend was over the speed limit and until we heard the brief WHOOP WHOOP of the siren we didn’t realize there was a police car behind us. I made and appropriate curse, my friend though… He, well… went into a panic. He pulled over quickly, turned the car off tossed the keys onto the dash and sat ramrod straight with his hands on the top of the wheel. His skin tone went almost ash gray and he started sweating, a lot. In the moment I didn’t initially realize that, I was getting over my brief scare and then calmed down… mostly. At this point I realized my friend was terrified. I thought it was because of his Dad, he was a nice man but he was strict, cutting school and getting a ticket… Well it wasn’t going to be good if he found out. The officer came over and was polite and friendly, asking for license, registration and insurance. He told us to stay in the car he would be back. I tried talking to my friend, typical kid stuff really, your dad wont find out, dont worry, it’s just a ticket but he still sat straight up, sweating and wide eyed. When the officer came back he handed back the papers and told my friend to slow down, no ticket, just a brief lecture to drive safely and be smart. The officer drove off and my friend slowly relaxed into the seat, after a minute he asked me to drive.

Now, He was a good friend I’d grown up with him, from kids playing with matchbox cars and BMX bikes to talking about which girl we wanted to ask out. We had talked about, parents, sex, girls, school, college, drugs, religion and even some politics. When I asked if he was ok, why he was sweating and shaking all he would say is “Just Drive, you wouldn’t understand.” I drove, that’s what friends do. We went to the mall things got better, we had a good time. On the drive home though he had me drive again. He did try explaining it to me.. I kind of understood it, but not really. What’s scary about a police officer? What did surprise me was when we got home he asked me to come in for a minute, then he told his Dad. His father listened to him, told him he handled it exactly right and then thanked me for driving home. There was no punishment… That I really didn’t understand, my friend had been punished once for being 10 minutes late. I was honestly very confused by the entire situation.

At the time didn’t understand, I had zero frame of reference to go by. My friend did spend some time trying to explain it to me later but… He had a hard time getting me to understand. He understood it on a visceral level though, and I couldn’t. I still can’t, not really. I understand it intellectually but I can never feel it not like he did, and millions of people still do.

30 years later and I’m still trying to understand, not just race relations but many things. I think the key is being patient, listening without judgement and, caring enough to try and relate. If you are the one trying to teach, or trying to learn, whatever the topic may be, be patient, listen and care… You may learn something and be a better person for it.

A to Z The Truth is out there…

… Yeah I know only I could use a X-Files tagline in blog title. I’m betting it’s not true go look it up 🙂

See the source image

Having said that, Truth is something in short supply now. Perhaps it is my naivete from being a kid but I do believe people and TV were more truthful when I was kid vs now. As examles I give you the following list of things that aren’t truthful at all.

  1. My Dogs – They Lie to me with their eye’s. They have been out, as a matter of fact they have been out twice now. As soon as they see me though I get little cries and covert glances at the doors.
  2. The NY Mets – Even when I dont follow them, they lie. Every year it looks like they are goiing to have a good season.. they tell us they will and then BOOM, 23,001 erors in a single game.
  3. The Internet – I look up when a movie plays, it lies, when something opens or closes and it lies, what happened in DC today it lies, how many dead, how many hurt, it lies, how the fire started it lies… oh wait no that’s the news.
  4. The News – See #3
  5. My Kids – Mr. Nobody did it, I dont know who did it, (Kids name) Did it. That one guy did it. Let me say My Mom had it easier when something was broke.. She KNEW I did it lol.
  6. Pants – Pants lie… oh they do so lie, My Pants lie to me all the time when I look at the sizes because there is no way they shouldn’t fit. New pants and old alike LIARS!!
  7. Myself – I’ll just watch one episode of (insert anything on Netflix)
  8. Facebook and anyone using it to say they are so “Done with the Drama”, “Toxic People”, and almost any claim starting with “No one believed it until this happened…”
  9. The Sun – This is one of the biggest lies… In cahoots with The Sky. I look out my window the sun is shining there are white puffy clouds in a bright blue sky. I go outside and BAM… frostbite and frozen eyeballs.
  10. Myself again- Ill keep up on this years A to Z Challenge. (I am caught up again)

Of course… there is always another perspective…
